I was invited to give a history and tour of my SherlockComics.com website at the most recent “Five Miles From Anywhere” virtual scion meeting, and it’s now available for viewing, in case you’re curious. Watch me talk about different kinds of comics featuring Sherlock Holmes for 45 minutes. (If that link doesn’t work, my section starts about 7 1/2 minutes in.)
There are some great East Coast region shows that I haven’t attended since I moved to the Midwest (ten years ago!). One of the best is the Baltimore Comic-Con. I am thrilled that KC and I are able to go this year, because it’s the best kind of traditional comic book show for me: plenty of guests, reflecting all kinds of comics, from all different eras, with a definite comic focus. It’s about two months out, and tickets are available […]
I am more than thrilled to once again bring you an exclusive reveal of the cover art for the upcoming Sherlock: A Scandal in Belgravia Part Two issue #4. The fourth and final issue of the miniseries from Titan Comics will go on sale November 9 at 48 pages for $4.99. Based on the script by Stephen Moffat and Mark Gatiss, the comic is illustrated by Jay. Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and John Watson (Martin Freeman) work to finally defeat […]
I survived San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) 2022! How’d I do it? By flying in Wednesday and flying out Friday. Which gave me one day to do panels, and even that was a lot. (Mark Evanier was complaining that people don’t call it Comic-Con International: San Diego, which is its proper name, and wondered why they still use the old name. For the same reason Batgirl is back again: traditional comic fans love nostalgia and hate change. And I include […]
Two weeks ago, news broke that Oni Press stalwarts James Lucas Jones (company publisher) and Charlie Chu (VP of Creative & Business Development) were no longer at the company. Today came word that four more high-level staffers are gone. Popverse reports that “Senior VP of sales and marketing Alex Segura, Sales Manager Henry Barajas, Senior Editor Amanda Meadows, and Editor Jasmine Amiri are no longer with the company.” These were apparently layoffs. Additionally, head of publicity Tara Lehmann left the […]
I am thrilled to bring you the cover art for the upcoming Sherlock: A Scandal in Belgravia issue #2. (And how happy am I that Mycroft gets a cover!) The second issue of the four-issue miniseries from Titan Comics will go on sale September 14 at 48 pages for $4.99. Based on the script by Stephen Moffat and Mark Gatiss, the comic is illustrated by Jay, and the plot features Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and John Watson (Martin Freeman) working […]
It’s a week away, which isn’t much time, but we’re all having to be more flexible these days. The Toronto Comic Arts Festival (TCAF) is taking place June 17-19 this year at the Toronto Reference Library on Yonge St. It’s a blend of virtual and in-person events. The well-respected Libraries & Education Day, held Friday, June 17, is taking place online, for example, while the new Academic Symposium on “Histories & Futures of Comics Communities” takes place the same day […]
Titan Comics is continuing to translate and publish the manga adaptations of the BBC’s Sherlock TV show episodes. The first half of “A Scandal in Belgravia”, the first episode of the second season, was serialized from 2019-2020 and collected in Oct 2020. (If you missed getting it, it is currently listed for reorder at your local comic shop this month under Diamond code MAY22 1791.) Part two begins serialization in August. (Part one ran five issues, so I assume this […]
We live in an era where nothing is dead forever. Brand awareness is so difficult to develop, with so many things demanding our attention, that anything that was somewhat successful has a chance to come back. Which means I shouldn’t be surprised that Watson and Holmes, the urban comic version of the classic characters, has a new story coming out! But I am very pleased. This is one of my favorite takes on the character in comics. We last saw […]
This is a bit devious. Last year, ComicMix ended up settling a lawsuit brought by the Dr. Seuess estate. That decision prohibited them from publishing Oh, The Places You’ll Boldly Go!, a Kickstarted Seuss/Star Trek mashup. A judge had previously ruled that such combinations are not parodic or transformative. Apparently, as part of that lawsuit, research was done on the Seuss copyrights. Now ComicMix is crowdfunding The Zaks and Other Lost Stories, a collection of six stories now in the […]
